US LRRP

scale: 120mm

sculpted by: Vince Wai

This is an photo essay of how I painted my LRRP. The media used are water-soluble oil paint and acrylic. For the tools and more information about the paint that I use, please refer to the 1/35 SS article.

face

The paint used for painting the face is Holbein Duo Aqua Oil and Winsor & Newton Artisan Oil. Both of these are water soluble oil paint which can be mix with acrylic and other water soluble media. The method used is the wet on wet blending.

1) The figure is first sprayed with primer and left to dry overnight. 2) The face is painted with an undercoat of acrylic flesh colour
3) A coat of basic flesh of water soluble oil is added. The colour consist of white + yellow ochre + burnt sienna + a small amount of red. Also I had started to add area of darker colour to the shadow area which is basic flesh + burnt umber and blunt sienna. At this stage, I also added the eyes too 4) I usually start with the eyes first. I think it's always safer to finish the eyes first as it is surrounded by the flesh colour. First I painted the eyes with dark blue, next I added a lighter blue to give the eyes more depth.
5) black line and pupils are added 6 - 8) start smoothing the shadow area colour with the flesh tone colour
7)  8) white color is also added to highlight area
9) Raw Umber and blue grey is added to the lower jaw 10 - 12) the blue grey and raw umber is blended with the flesh colour
11)  12) Using water soluble oil is much faster and the head is finished within two hours. I used to paint the face with acrylic which usually takes twice as much time to come up with the same result.
13) both sides of the face finished. I left the figure to dry overnight.  14) The face is then given several coat of dull clear spray

Tiger Strip Camo

Next I proceed to painting the camouflage uniform. It will of great help if you can find some photo reference of the actual uniform. There are several books which have nice illustrations and photos of the Tiger strip Camo and are listed at the end of the article.

For the uniform, I prefer using acrylic than use water soluble oil as the former enable me to paint with very precise edges.

15) Basic green colour painted 16) Black strip added
17) Light brown thin strip is added round black strips
18) Slightly redder brown spot is added
